Word “Trypophobia” is formed from the two words “trypa” which means holes and “phobia” which means fear. A person suffering from this disease has a fear of cluster of holes or irregular objects. This word was coined around 2005 in an online forum. However, trypophobia name of diagnosis is not present anywhere in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). Some people on seeing the holes said that they felt grossed and suffered from panic attacks, felt nauseated or itchy or sweated. It is a rather unusual type of phobia nowadays found among many people. Here, we will share some important information about the disease, its causes and how to cure it permanently.
Causes of Trypophobia
Scientists Arnold Wilkins and Geoff Cole of the University of Essex’s Centre for Brain Science in an article wrote that this phenomenon is the result when the brain response relates holes or irregular objects to the sign of danger.
Another reason might be an emotional problem. In the past, maybe the person had suffered something related to circular objects or objects that have holes in them.
This phobia might also be associated with chicken pox, measles, skin blisters or rashes (organic objects).
Tests for Trypophobia
Guidelines to test for trypophobia:
1. Take pictures which consist of holes. Start with the scarce holes, then move onto the one which has dense holes.
2. Look at that picture for at least for 5 seconds.
3. If you get frightened by seeing those pictures or any of the below symptoms are experienced which includes:
If any body-part is itching
Experiencing chest pain or sweating
Then you can conclude that you have this phobia.
4. You can rate yourself on the capability of what density of holes you can withstand.
If you are okay with the large holes, then your rate of suffering is less than those who can’t see images containing the holes of any density.
Cure for Trypophobia
There are several ways through which you can fight out the fear of holes or trypophobia, and we have listed out some below:
1. You should not run away from the fear, instead, “CONFRONT” it. Treat holes or circular objects as usual shapes like others.
2. Practicing yoga and meditation is an excellent option for stabilizing your mental health.
3. Intake of healthy food, do regular exercises and sleeping for adequate hours are must for keeping your body in healthy condition.
4. Therapies like:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: This therapy helps the person to change the perspective towards various things. You will be encouraged to visualize a panic attack after which you will be required to concentrate on beneficial notions.
Exposure Therapy: This technique will help you to treat the anxiety. It involves the patient to get exposed to the objects or things that they fear of. It will eventually decrease the stress or fear.
Hypnotherapy: It helps to change subconsciousness present in you and will generate positive thoughts and attitude towards the fear.
EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique): It is also called tapping. It helps in healing the physical, emotional, performance imbalance. It uses the technique of Chinese Meridian Technique which uses energy circuits throughout the body.
TFT (Thought Field Therapy): This technique is beneficial in curing the mental and emotional disturbance in someone’s body. This uses tapping with fingers at meridian points of the upper body and hands.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reintegration Technique): This powerful technique helps the person to distress the memories if he is suffering from mental disorder or imbalance.

5. Also, some medications can be taken (if phobia is very high) on the advice of the mental health therapists.
